Program Highlight: Veteran Volunteer Driver Program
Free medical transportation for veterans across county lines

Partnership between Door-Tran (staff time for onboarding riders, making them or their family feel comfortable, invoicing, coordinating vehicle trips with transportation vehicle, rider and driver, driver recruitment, orientation and background checks), County Veteran Service Office (verifies Door County veteran status, covers fuel costs), and Door County Transportation Department (use of a vehicle that includes the repair & maintenance, insurance and registration, inspections, and staff to move the vehicles around and assist with scheduling vehicle).

When a county vehicle is not available or they are traveling from a distance north of Sturgeon Bay or the trip begins south of Sturgeon Bay and it’s more convenient for the driver, the veteran still receives a free ride using donations. Internally we refer to it as the “golden heart” fund as it originated from the volunteer drivers who were nominated and won the Volunteer Center of Door County’s Golden Heart Award in 2014.

They received $500 to gift to a nonprofit of their choice and that year, that donation started the Golden Heart Award. Whenever we receive a donation of $50 or greater, the donor may direct which program they would like to support. Please consider donating to that fund to ensure our veterans do not have to pay a fare to get to their medical appointments.
Amvets Post 51 recently donated $2,000 to support this program.
